OMSCHRIJVING:

Brussels is a layered city, this is what we are trying to show in our model. We worked along the subway, and put the focus on Riga station. There are five different layers. Each layer tells a different story. The first layer represents the subway and the zones of influence. This layer is covered with sand to show the underground atmosphere. The layer shows a direct zone of influence and an indirect zone of influence. The next layer represents the fluxes of the area. The main fluxes in this area are car based. There are also two important railroads, the tram and the train. It’s remarkable that different types of functions are located around areas where the accessibility rate is high. The functions are all shown on the thirth layer. Those are covered around the tram road and a few are located near the trainstation. Another layer which is very important for Riga station is the layer of the green public space. This layer shows how the railway station is connected by green axe across the neighbourhood. Walking around, we discovered that this public space really contects people. Mainly when the weather is fine, there is a lot of activity from children and their parents. It’s a pity that this huge recreation area only is used to the maximum when the weather is nice. This is why we add some interesting pavilions in the park, so the park users can meet again even when the weather is bad. The fifth and even the last layer shows two different connections. It shows visible and invisible connections. Visible connections are interactions between people in a physical way, while invisible connections represent the internet. Internet is a flow we can’t see, but is very present in our daily life. Those visible and invisible connections are a kind of fluxes as well.
